The International Disability Alliance (IDA) is a network of over 1,100 organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) and their families, promoting the rights of persons with disabilities across the globe. In 2022, working with Sightsavers, IDA sought to harness its convening role as a global representative of OPDs to establish an online disability knowledge platform, streamlining and boosting access to existing knowledge and resources on disability inclusive development (DID) and humanitarian action. PIL’s Lara Bezzina, Melissa Miller and Fabio Belafatti came together to develop a database identifying disability-related knowledge initiatives including platforms, online resource repositories, collaborative initiatives, academic disability studies and portals of experiences. This comprehensive mapping exercise – developed to feed into the planned platform – included an initial list of over 140 such initiatives, from which 69 were then mapped in detail, analysing their UNCRPD compliance, types of disabilities targeted, geographical scope, sustainability and funding, quality standards and accessibility, among others. This analysis was brought together in a final report which also included an exploration of the existing gaps in knowledge, best practices and recommendations for the platform structure and content.
